“Coal Lounge (2024)”
at The 10-Years-On: Community Day

Hartmut Veit

Saturday 17 February, 10am to 5.30pm

The first “Coal Lounge” was staged in Morwell in 2014 in direct response to the Hazelwood Mine fire. Originally occupying empty commercial shopfronts in Morwell as a pop-up gallery they provided the community an activation/meeting space featuring lounge room setting whilst displaying Hartmut Veit’s contemporary artworks and installations made from locally sourced brown coal.

This new reiteration of “The CoaLounge (2024): 10 years on” in Morwell commemorates, celebrates and reflects on the mine fire’s significant impact and the resilience of the local LATROBE valley communities. The works shown cover many years of sustained engagement and a wide range of the artist Hartmut Veit’s socially-engaged art projects and interactions with Latrobe Valley communities and locally sourced brown coal –  starting with the Hazelwood Mine fire in 2014 – through to the subsequent closure of the Hazelwood Mine / power station in 2017 and culminating with his 40,000 word Master’s thesis and coal exhibitions/performances in Melbourne in 2018. This new 2024 CoaLounge offers an opportunity to re-engage the community in a reflection on their strength, success and resilience in a rapidly changing environment, 10 years down the track
